Pondering what to do this sunday?

August 28th, 2008

Well if you live in Auckland, the answer is simple, take yourself to Kraftbomb
Created by Karla Hansen and City Down Kraftbomb looks set to be a fantastic event. One that’s fun. full of really original crafts and also lovely lovely people.

Kraftbomb is being held from 1-4pm at the Grey Lynn Community Centre’s Garden Room.
doesn’t that sound cute?

It also sounds like the perfect place to sit down and treat yourself to one of City’s cupcakes - there is a very good reason why she’s called the cupcake queen of NZ.

Following that Kraftbomb will be on the last Sunday of each month. Yes Auckland it’s a regular market every month.

hooray for craft!

things i learnt from the Sunday Star times

August 28th, 2008

Apparently Craft is only an Auckland thing.

this is Strange becuase
Craftwerk ( the semi regular Auckland Craft fair) was started in Wellington, by the ,lovely Heather Barnes, i know this becuase i was there the night we all dreamed up the name and helped Heather put the first fair on at the Paramount in July of 2006.

She then took it to Auckland, and beyond that took it on tour around the country with Blink from ALOWHUM

NZ has two main shopping sites for Crafters toggle (which is a curated shop) based in Auckland
and
felt which is more akin to esty by having no barrier to entry
felt is based out of Christchurch

Also based out of Christchurch is the National hub for International knit in Public day.

NZ’s strongest stitch and bitch group the Stitch ‘n Bitch Knitting Circle hosted by Loop knittery
is also based in ChCh, why is it NZ’s strongest?
it’s weekly and you can learn knitting and spinning and anything to do with wool there.

then we come to Wellington, rember wellington it’s where Bitcraft started, which became Craftwerk.

wellington is home to
WorldSweetWorld, Nz’s answer to Craft Magazine, with article from local creative types in NZ.

Craft2.0, that’s this site here, home to 3 fairs a year in wellington and 2 a year in Christchurch

TheNewDowse, now normally you don’t classify galleries in the Craft Category but sicne TheNewDowse has such a large Collection of Craft Art Works, we’ll list it
Just visit them if don’t believe me, The Family and Believe it… or Not? currently on exhibit are totally about taking Craft to another level

and finally there is volume, which i plan to write about a little more later
it’s on at the Hawke’s Bay Museum & Art Gallery, it’s a symposium planning to explore and challenge the position of the craft / object maker in New Zealand today.

Now the article in the Sunday star times, ‘CraftAttack’ profiled some amazing, wonderful and delightful people on the Auckland Craft Scene. We totally applaud that, but as to the thoughts by the writer that “one wonders if the phenomenon is rolling out New Zealand-wide, or weather it is a peculiarly inner-city Aucklo-Centric endeavour.”

Well HELLO!!!!
i guess research is not alive and well in some parts of the world any more and it’s disappointing, and lazy. I’m not normally one to get grumpy about press related to Craft in NZ but honestly how about looking beyond the bombay hills?

And it’s sad becuase here is a beautifully photographed article, and interviews with some amazing cool Crafty divas (and i don’t want to take away from them or that becuase AWESOME) but how can something miss the mark so much?

Because
TV3 did research
The DominionPost does research
The Christchurch Press does research
GOOD Magazine does research
Idealog does research

in case you missed it here is the article in all it’s PDF glory

page2
page3
page4

I’m sad and grumpy and a little mad
so i stared a facebook group
and next i think time for all things old school and awesome
a letter writing campaign
a letter writing campaign

what is the next big thing?

August 28th, 2008

As i do every thursday
I went over to the TVNZ on demand website to watch the latest episode of Media7

if you don’t know about, Media7 it’s is the lovely Mr Russell Brown from my fav kiwi blogging home Public Address. Yes maybe i gush a little much, but it’s nice to have some intelligent, fun reading and discussion on a daily basis and Media7 is insightful talking, but fun.

So this week was all about magazines with a panel that had Wendyl Nissen , Finlay Macdonald and New Zealand Gardener editor Lynda Hallinan.

it was a great watch and at the end they confirmed what i think everyone here knows, Craft is the next big thing.

i wonder if Mr Brown could find an excuse to have Wendyl and finlay on every week?

thank you so much
