This is the second in a creative collaborations series designed to plant a seed and inspire Craft 2.0 creatives to take your talents places. Last time I interviewed the creators of the Montana World of Wearable Arts entry “Second Skin” about complementary skills, friendship, and the joys of sewing and project managing themselves to glory.
This time around I have been to Radio Active’s annual Handle the Jandal DIY Music Video Awards to see what can be done with the DIY attitude in the absence of NZ or Air or Creative New Zealand funding. Watching the winning entry from this year, Parallel Dance Ensemble’s ‘Weight Watchers’, I noticed an aesthetic that would not be out of place at a Craft 2.0 fair: sweet, colour saturated, candy coated fun, topped with a bit of satirical sauce. There was also an abundance of bunnies and nostalgic summer motifs, not to mention maniacal animated vegetables and small dogs. Links to some of the videos can be found here.
Witness the winning entry (I bet you smile and end up with a craving for licorice allsorts by the end……)
So do you reckon you could Handle the Jandal and come up with the goods?
Well, have a think about it.
Do you already:
draw inspiration from Homegrown sounds? (Perhaps while you craft or draw).
pride yourself on using stuff to hand to make something beautiful and “finished” looking?
enjoy fruitful technical/creative collaborations?
work concepts into what you make?
have some serious camera/editing/animation/directing/costuming/cat herding skills stashed in your craft bag?
If so perhaps you should get your kit together, seek out co-conspirators and craft up a DIY music video ready for next year.
If you need some more inspiration take a look at these videos (not all are Handle the Jandal entries) to see what can be done with:
Of course not all music videos require animation to be awesome but I can see in my mind’s eye some fantastic stop motion graffiti knit matched with some pop, or some of minu’s creations coming to life with a little cowbell.
For those without the urge to go the whole nine yards why not go in for a little product placement? Adorn a lovely songbird or rock god/goddess with your handcrafted items and get them singing your praises.
New Zealand is a small country, it is easy as to make connections and make things happen in our creative communities.
