Welcome to a series of post aimed at inspiring you to get your Craft one, there will be tips tricks and ideas for new crafters, established crafter and everyone else in the middle. Wether you are thinking about setting up an online shop, wondering how to start selling or something else, hopefully these might help you find your path a little easier.
So first up – Getting organised for Chistmas
Makers are assembling their tools, sewing machines, glue guns and other supplies ready to begin the countdown to Christmas Day. They are getting organised. Are you?
Don’t panic if you haven’t started. Just grab a pen and paper and make a list of all the things you would love to make and who you will make them for. Now check the calender to see exactly how long you have!
Suddenly that list looks a bit too long doesn’t it? OK, so you are going to have to make some decisions about who you make for, and who you buy handmade for. The run up to Christmas sees professional crafters working at fever pitch to help, so check your local area for craft fairs – they will mushroom in the run up to the festive season.
Now, on to the making of your own stuff. Plan a new list of achievable aims. Be realistic and honest – you will have time to craft for fewer than you had hoped BUT it means you can still focus on crafting wonderful stuff.
For jewelry making supplies Craft Runner is a great place
Want fabric? Everywhere from your local quiltery, op shops to Trademe and Spotlight can provide fabric for dolls, toys and quilts.
For metalsmiths, Regal Casting is a good place to browse for sheet metal and tools.
Scrapers can try Kiwiscraps
Got your stuff? Good, now set yourself an honest timetable. You know your own limitations as a crafter, so mark your list with the Who’s and the What’s you are making and stick to it! One item a week between now and Christmas will still be a great achievement. More if you are making small things.
Good luck and happy crafting!
